Have a great time outdoors at our sustainable food education charity and community garden. Enjoy a screen-free Saturday morning in our family workshops for children aged 4-16 with parents/carers (younger siblings welcome but remain the full responsibility of accompanying adult)

Take part in activities such as:

Digging, planting, harvesting, composting, bug hunting, making habitats for animals. Learn new skills and find out about the fantastic fresh food we grow at our sustainable food education charity.

3/6 Pond Dipping – Discover the creatures making our wildlife pond their home

10/6 Practical – Get growing on the field

17/6 Wonderful Water! – FInd out how we use water wisely and how important it is for the plants and creatures at Communigrow

24/6 Practical – There are lots of jobs to be done at this time of year, help us keep the veg in tip top condition

1/7 Marvellous Meadows! – Learn to identify different grasses, and the creatures that live in these amazing ecosystems

8/7 Practical – Join in with practical activities on the field

15/7 Cook up a feast! – Harvest fresh veg to make a tasty dish

The Field School at Communigrow is a relaxed outdoor setting where young people can be themselves.

Experienced tutors and absorbing activities mean that everyone, including those with anxiety or sensory needs, feels comfortable.

Whilst acquiring valuable practical skills, learners grow in confidence and experience the mental health benefits that come with spending time in nature.

Registration at 11.05 am, session runs 11.15am – 12.30pm

Lavender Heart Wreath Workshop

Take some time out in our peaceful charity garden to create a beautiful fresh lavender wreath that will dry naturally and last for months.

Your tutor will be the highly talented Donna Sellick of Busybblooms – British flower farmer and eco florist – using fabulous locally grown Folegate lavender.

Your session will include tea and cake and all the materials you need.

This workshop is suitable for adults and young people aged 14+.

This is block booking ticket for 5 Communigrow Tots sessions running from April 24th to May 22nd 2025 at The East Malling Centre (Chapman Way, East Malling, ME19 6SD) at a discounted price of £25.

Fun and educational indoor and outdoor nature-based activities and crafts for toddlers and preschoolers with our carbon literacy certified Field School Tutors.

Tots learn how to sow seeds, taste fresh vegetables, look after our insects & birds, grow flowers & have fun in the woods.

Good to know:

• These sessions are for toddlers (4 y/o and under). Please make a booking per participating child.

• Maximum of 3 children per adult please.

Start your own veg patch

Perfect for beginners who want a Summer of sustainably grown, chemical free food!

Join this small group at our sustainable food education charity to learn everything you need to know about setting up your own veg patch using sustainable growing techniques. Led by our RHS qualified Head Community Gardener, Gavin Hughes, you will leave full of confidence for the growing season ahead. There will be plenty of opportunity for troubleshooting and questions.

This course is for adults. Young People aged 14 and older can book a place if accompanied by a participating adult.

About your workshop tutor

Gavin Hughes is the Head Community Gardener at Communigrow, responsible for all horticultural aspects on our 2.4 acre site. This includes growing all of our vegetables, teaching skills and theory to our volunteers and beneficiaries and planning for the development of the site.

Gavin has a RHS Diploma in Horticulture as well as a teaching qualification. He has also taught the RHS qualification to mature students.

In 2018 Gavin was privileged to work at RHS Chelsea on the Spirit of Cornwall Garden.

Communigrow is a sustainable food education charity based in East Malling. We teach people to grow food in a chemical free way, working in harmony with nature.

There may also be chemical free plug plants available to purchase at Communigrow to get you started.
